About Us
The Tasmanian Academy, the Tasmanian Polytechnic and the Tasmanian Skills Institute were formed on 1 January 2009 to provide post-compulsory education and training up to advanced diploma level for the people of Tasmania. They were formed from TAFE Tasmania and from the senior secondary colleges where grade 11 and 12 university entrance and vocational courses were taught.
We are the libraries of these former institutions.
We are committed to providing quality services, relevant resources and a stimulating, dynamic learning environment to support our clients in achieving a great learning experience.
We believe that access to quality learning resources is critical for the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in post-compulsory education and training.
We improve intellectual and physical access to quality learning resources for our clients, the students and staff of Tasmania's post-compulsory learning institutions by:
- managing and developing readily accessible collections of relevant learning resources,
- providing advice, assistance and training in finding and using learning resources,
- identifying and obtaining resources from elsewhere where information needs cannot be met from existing collections,
- providing equipment and expertise for accessing, preparing and presenting learning resources.
We manage more than 200,000 learning resources distributed across our many campus libraries. Most of these are books, but they also include 10,000 videos and 3,000 journal titles.
We welcome recommendations and requests from staff and students for purchases - in fact most of our new material is previewed and recommended by teachers. We also remove thousands of obsolete items each year so that the collections remain current and relevant.
